Summary

Zvartnots International Airport, Armenia’s main air gateway near Yerevan, is handling no flights during the day from 2 to 7 November. From Monday 2 to Friday 6 November, no aircraft take off or land between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Yerevan time (6 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Paris). On Saturday 7 November, the closure runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to the airport’s spokesperson, works are under way where the runway crosses an aircraft taxiway. The official notice to pilots confirms the closure during these hours. Armenia’s Civil Aviation Committee says the works will last six days. On Monday, the last flight to land before the closure, an Aeroflot aircraft, touched down at 8:19 a.m.

Analysis

Zvartnots handles most of Armenia’s air traffic, in a landlocked country whose land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan remain closed. Closing the runway only during the day keeps evening, night and early-morning flights running and avoids shutting the airport completely. Diaspora travellers arriving or leaving this week should still check their schedules, as some flights may have been moved.

Possible consequences

The Civil Aviation Committee advises passengers to check schedules with their airline or on the airport’s website. Normal traffic is due to resume on 7 November from 3 p.m.
