Summary
Direct flights between Sofia and Yerevan resume on Saturday 7 November. Bulgarian airline GullivAir will operate the route in cooperation with Bulgaria Air, it announced on Wednesday 4 November. Flights will run twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays. After the inaugural flight, the next services are scheduled for Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 November. The winter schedule runs until 25 March 2027, and the airline is considering extending the route into the summer if demand allows. The first aircraft will be welcomed at Zvartnots airport by Bulgaria’s ambassador to Armenia, Nikola Nikolov, the head of the European Union delegation, Vassilis Maragos, and representatives of Armenian institutions. By the end of 2026, connections across the Bulgaria Air network should be offered once the two airlines’ booking systems have been integrated.
Analysis
The restored link adds a direct gateway to the European Union from Yerevan. Bulgaria is also home to a long-established Armenian community, notably in Plovdiv and Sofia. The announcement credits the resumption to the efforts of Ambassador Nikola Nikolov, working with GullivAir’s CEO, Captain Yanko Ivanov. For Armenian travellers, Sofia can also be a transfer point: this winter the airline is developing long-haul flights to the Maldives, Phuket and Bangkok.
Possible consequences
The inaugural flight arrives on the last day of runway works at Zvartnots, where no aircraft take off or land on 7 November between 9am and 3pm Yerevan time. Exact schedules should be checked with the airline.
