Summary
Armenian shooter Elmira Karapetyan won the silver medal in the women’s 50 m pistol at the World Shooting Championships in Doha, Qatar, on 3 November. With 542 points, she finished second out of seventeen competitors, four points behind Turkey’s Şevval İlayda Tarhan, who took gold with 546, and ahead of Kazakhstan’s Irina Yunusmetova (537). The Armenian made the difference late in the competition, with series of 93, 94 and 95 points. The world championships run until 14 November. Armenia is represented by three shooters, Elmira Karapetyan, Gevorg Melkonyan and Artyom Grigoryan, coached by Seyran Nikoghosyan.
Analysis
The podium confirms the form of the 32-year-old, who won a World Cup stage in the 10 m air pistol, her Olympic event, in Cairo on 14 October. The 50 m pistol is not on the Olympic programme, so this medal does not earn a place for Los Angeles 2028. But the Olympic events in Doha award 36 quota places, and Karapetyan, who has already competed at the Tokyo and Paris Games, brings plenty of experience.
Possible consequences
The Olympic events, which award quota places for Los Angeles 2028, continue in Doha until 14 November.
