Summary

Tennis player Alina Charaeva, who represents Armenia, won the WTA 125 Valle d’Aosta Ladies Open in Courmayeur, Italy, on 1 November. The second seed beat Germany’s sixth seed Noma Noha Akugue 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour and a half in the final, without dropping serve. In the semi-final, she had beaten France’s Elsa Jacquemot in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-1). It is her second title of the season at this level, after Midland in the United States. Ranked around 100th in the world before the event, the 24-year-old is expected to rise to around 82nd, her best ranking yet.

Analysis

The title confirms the rise of a player now established in the world’s top 100, a ranking that makes it easier to enter the main draws of the biggest tournaments. For Armenia, which has very few players at this level, it is a rare showcase. Born in 2002, Charaeva is coached by Spain’s Carlos Martínez Comet and plays under the Armenian flag.

Possible consequences

She moves on to the Hong Kong Open, where she faces Croatia’s Antonia Ružić in the first round.
