Summary
On 3 November 1896, Jean Jaurès denounced in the French Chamber of Deputies the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Abdülhamid II. Three events mark the speech’s 130th anniversary. On Tuesday 3 November, from 9 am to 1:15 pm, the National Library of France (Richelieu site, 5 rue Vivienne, Paris) hosts a study day, “Pro Armenia (1896-1914)”, named after the newspaper founded in Paris in 1900 to defend the Armenian cause. On Thursday 5 November at 7:30 pm, the Shoah Memorial holds a talk in Toulouse on “speeches that made history” (38 rue d’Aubuisson). On Friday 6 November at 7 pm, the Haute-Garonne departmental council hosts a round table, “Save the Armenians! Jean Jaurès 130 years ago” (1 boulevard de la Marquette).
Analysis
Jaurès’s speech remains a landmark of Armenian memory in France: it denounced the European powers’ inaction in the face of the massacres. The study day at the National Library, opened by France’s ambassador to Armenia and Armenia’s ambassador to France, brings together historians including Vincent Duclert, Claire Mouradian, Gilles Candar and Raymond Kévorkian. It paves the way for a larger conference planned for spring 2027.
